B&H Publishers present themselves for the first time at the Book Expo America 2006 DC, and the American public will have an opportunity to meet the authors and works that build the book history in B&H. The motto of our performance is "Bosnia and Herzegovina National Treasure”. Sarajevo is a city where is being reconstructed the National University Library, which was destroyed and burnt down during the war, and whose space is one of the most important cultural and historical buildings of Sarajevo – the City Hall. Because of that, the first presentation of Bosnian book at the American Fair, in a symbolic way, reminds us on the fact that Sarajevo put its candidature for the World Book Capital 2009 (UNESCO project). We would be honoured to invite by our presentation, in a symbolic way, all the publishers from USA and the world to the 19th International Book Fair and the Book Biennial, that will be held from the 23rd to the 28th April, 2007 to confirm once again the openness of our cultures and present the extraordinary authors, especially the writers and artists. One of the proofs how much we appreciate our writers is also the fact that thy are the symbol on our bank notes, and it is the greatest testimony about respecting the culture of diversity and freedom of expression in B&H, that is presented by the works of: Ivo Andrić, Musa Ćazim Ćatić, Mak Dizdar, Jovan Dučić, Petar Kočić, Meša Selimović, Aleksa Šantić, Antun Branko Šimić, Nikola Šop, Filip Višnjić etc.
The design of the programme of presentation of B&H book, the work of the Sarajevo Fine Arts Academy student, Enes Huseinčehajić, and the work of the esteemed graphic artist, Mirsad Konstantinović, show that dedication to the writing and book in Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the most important traditional values of culture and art in B&H.
On behalf of the The Association of Publishers and Booksellers of B&H, I would specially like to thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of B&H, the B&H Embassy in the USA, the Ministry of Civil Affairs of B&H for the support in organizing this event and the organizer of Book Expo America for all the help and hospitality.
Ibrahim Spahić,
President of the Association of Publishers and Booksellers of B&H
B&H publishers are presenting scientific, cultural, artistic and educational activity of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Book Expo America, under the auspices of Ministry of Civil Affairs. Within the Strategy of cultural policy, The Ministry of Civil Affairs is dedicated to the promotion of BH Book in the world, because the books, as well as other sorts of art, in B&H represent the greatest challenge for those interested in our history and contemporary development of B&H. They say that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country of book, and that confirm not only the writers in B&H, but also the important writers from B&H in other parts of the world, whose roots and origin are recognizable. Our support to the Association of Publishers and Booksellers of B&H in presenting themselves at Book Expo America derives from our extraordinary interest to give an opportunity to the American public to continuously meet the values of the B&H society. At the same time, the American writers, among whom I would single out Susan Sontag, and the extraordinary American journalists have given by their work a great contribution to our struggle for freedom and democracy. By making new opportunities for common cooperation of B&H publishers and the American publishers, booksellers, authors and media, we will improve the good relationships and cooperation of our countries.
