Social, political and economical process in former SFRJ, which has, in addition to everything else, started under the influence of the similar processes and changes world-wide, seized Bosnia and Herzegovina by the end of eighties. Following happenings, with all the visible signs of the close disaster of the socialist system, had also reflected the Institute for History. Right after the elections in November 1990 there were certain political differentiation at the Institute. According to our approximate evaluation, one third of the Institute personnel has aligned with three winning political parties (SDS, SDA and HDZ). The majority of members have stayed out of political parties, at least in the beginning.

However, except for a few of them who have openly joined aggressors’ side, all the others were brought together by the same idea: survival of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Everything the Institute and co-worker were doing and have done was dedicated to the fight for Bosnia and Herzegovina, homeland of the citizens equal no matter what their nationality or religion was. That battle was fought as well known spiritual resistance of citizens. In the war conditions of Sarajevo, that all the World is familiar to, the very first task of the personnel who stayed in the besieged city which has been continuously bombed, was to secure the building of the Institute, as well as the furniture, documentation and the library. That was possible only by constant 24 hours presence of the employees of the Institute.

Except for those few who were ill or lived far from the city centre, the majority of personnel, altogether with the director, though permanent lethal danger, have regularly, even for a short time, stayed at the premises of the Institute.
